A Brief History of Apple Wine
Apple wine has been around for over 2,500 years. It dates as far back as Greek and Roman times.
In Germany records of apple wine from Emperor Karl the Great date back to 799 A.D. It has been a part of Frankfurt's culture ever since. It is also the official state drink of Hesse. In essence, apple wine is to Frankfurt what beer is to Munich.
Apple wine gained popularity in the 16th century when the local grape crop suffered from disease.
Locals often also refer to apple wine as Ebbelwoi, Stöffche, Schoppe or, a more recently coined term, Äppler.
Traditionally apple wine is served in a grey stoneware jug, adorned with blue decorations called a Bembel. Many of the local apple wine restaurants in Sachsenhausen (Frankfurt's apple wine district) serve apple wine this way.
